Why Slovakia?

Slovakia is part of the old Czechoslovakia and is situated in central Europe. It is bordered by Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine.

It has one of the fastest growing economies in Europe thanks largely to its entry to the EU in May 2004.

It has attracted many large businesses and has become one of the largest car manufacturing countries in Europe.

However it is slowly waking up to its potential as a Tourist Destination.
This has been helped by the cheap airlines flying several times a day to the country’s capital Bratislava. This is attracting increasing numbers of tourists to the capital thanks to the historical attractions, cheap food and alcohol.
However one area of Slovakia that is still relatively unknown by the British are its ski slopes, mountains, forests and lakes.

Slovakia is very mountainous and approximately 2/3rd of the country is covered by woodland. There are a number of national parks which are designated areas of natural beauty. During the Winter the numerous ski slopes provide plenty of opportunity for skiing at all levels as well as snowboarding. During the Summer there are many watersports, hiking and biking and other outdoor activities.

This together with its vast wealth of castles and other historical sites make Slovakia every bit as attractive as neighbouring Austria but with the added advantage of being much cheaper!

Most villages have their own Drag lift and there are several large ski resorts. Most are in the High Tatras to the east of the country.
However there are several decent sized ski Resorts throughout Slovakia of which Oščadnica in Veľká Rača is one of the most famous and is aptly named the “Snow Paradise”.
